Beating the hacker at his own game: The darker side of computer administration.

San Antonio, September 17, 2003: You think that your computer or network is really secure? The only way to find out if it really is secure or not, is to attack your own computer the way a cracker does. That all sounds pretty good, but what if you don’t have the tools or the knowledge to do the job? You could get a cracker to try to hack into your system for you, but is that really safe? If he actually gets in, will you be certain that he will get out and stay out?

‘To catch a thief, you must think like a thief’. “To protect your network from a cracker, you’ve got to get inside that cracker’s mind. By participating in a class that is incredibly intensive and extremely hands-on, the students are really able to see hacking techniques in action and figure out how to derail them.”
- EC-Council

Southern Methodist University will be offering a 5-day Ethical Hacker Certification course. The class will provide a very unique opportunity - to see your network from the eyes of a Hacker.

“Computer security is more important now than ever before. Network security is an ongoing process, its not something that you can just setup and leave it requires constant attendance and support. You also have to diligently keep current with the industry.”
- RoseAnn Guttierrez SMU Network Operations Manager/Instructor

The CEH Program certifies individuals in the specific network security discipline of Ethical Hacking from a vendor-neutral perspective. The Certified Ethical Hacker certification will significantly benefit security officers, auditors, security professionals, site administrators, and anyone who is concerned about the integrity of the network infrastructure.

To achieve CEH certification, you must pass exam 312-50 (conducted by Prometric) that covers the standards and language involved in common exploits, vulnerabilities and countermeasures. You must also show high-decree of knowledge of the tools used by hackers in exposing common vulnerabilities as well as the tools used by security professionals for implementing countermeasures.

What is Ethical Hacking? With the growth of the Internet, computer security has become a major concern for businesses and governments. They want to be able to take advantage of the Internet for electronic commerce, advertising, information distribution and access, and other pursuits, but they are worried about the possibility of being ?hacked.? At the same time, the potential customers of these services are worried about maintaining control of personal information that varies from credit card numbers to social security numbers and home addresses. In their search for a way to approach the problem, organizations came to realize that one of the best ways to evaluate the intruder threat to their interests would be to have independent computer security professionals attempt to break into their computer systems. This scheme is similar to having independent auditors come into an organization to verify its bookkeeping records. In the case of computer security, these ?tiger teams? or ?ethical hackers? would employ the same tools and techniques as the intruders, but they would neither damage the target systems nor steal information. Instead, they would evaluate the target systems? security and re-port back to the owners with the vulnerabilities they found and instructions for how to remedy them.
Courses associated with the new CEH programs can be taken through more than 60 EC-Council Accredited Training Centers located around the world. The Classes are delivered by EC-Council Certified Instructors.
